Review and Assessment Without the Gotchas
Learning objectives
- Create review questions aligned to lesson goals
- Use more than one way for students to show understanding
- Turn quiz results into a reteaching plan
Materials
- Index cards or mini whiteboards
- Question bank
- Exit tickets
Assessment should reveal what students understand and what the teacher should revisit, not reward tricky wording or embarrassment.
Review before grading
Use low-pressure recall, matching, sequencing, and explanation before a quiz. Students should know the topics and question types they will encounter.
Ask for understanding
Prefer clear questions that test the stated objective. Distractor answers should be plausible enough to assess learning but never silly, mocking, or culturally dated.
Use results
Sort missed questions by concept. Reteach patterns of misunderstanding, allow correction when appropriate, and record what needs reinforcement in the next lesson.
Facts to present
- Assessment should reveal what students understand so teaching can improve.
- Retrieval—trying to remember before seeing an answer—strengthens learning.
- Good questions match the lesson objective and require explanation, not only guessing.
- Games should reward thinking and teamwork rather than speed alone.
- Errors are information for reteaching; never use a review to humiliate a child.
Call unto the way of thy Lord with wisdom and fair exhortation, and reason with them in the better way. Lo! thy Lord is Best Aware of him who strayeth from His way, and He is Best Aware of those who go aright.
English meaning adapted from M. PickthallTeam explain-and-steal
- Ask one review question to a team and allow thirty seconds of discussion.
- One student answers and explains; a correct answer earns one point.
- If incomplete, another team may add—not mock—a missing idea for a shared point.
Debrief: Which question exposed something we should review again?
